Many people have a had hard time pronouncing Gros Ventre – it’s pronounced “grow vont.” Located just north of Jackson and west of the Continental Divide, The Gros Ventre Mountain Range offers some of the most magnificent scenery in the west. Views of the Teton Range are absolutely breathtaking and make for some if the best photographs. It has spectacular geological features that include a collage of colorful rocks and has the world’s largest landslide. The highest summit in the range is Doubletop Peak at 11,720 feet.
The United States government designated the Gros Ventre Wilderness in the early 1980s, and it now spans over 300,000 acres of national forest. This area affords amazing Jackson Hole snowmobiling trips, and the tour itself is a great fit for both snowmobiling novices and seasoned riders. The Gros Ventre road is closed to traffic during the winter months but is maintained and groomed for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.
Gros Ventre – Historic Landslide
Your Jackson, Wyoming Snowmobiling experience will start where the world’s largest landslide occurred back in 1925. It was caused by a very heavy snowpack and weeks of continual rain combined with earthquakes in the area. Sedimentary rock blocked the Gros Ventre River, forming a 200-foot-high dam, which a few years later broke, flooding the area below into the town of Kelly and killing 6 people. Today, the landslide is partially covered by the forest but you can still clearly see where it slid.
The Gros Ventre area, a little-known treasure, is one of the best snowmobile tours in Jackson Hole if you want to see the potential for an abundance of wildlife that have made this area their habitat. The Gros Ventre snowmobiling tour offers great opportunities to see moose, elk, black bear, fox, coyote, deer, and many other species of wildlife.
Winter on the Elk Refuge
The Gros Ventre is an essential calving ground for the 8000 head of elk that migrate here every winter. When snowmobiling through this area, please be very respectful to the wildlife and always keep a safe distance from them. It also helps to not disturb them given their winter reserves are limited which affects their survival ability in the harsh winter Wyoming conditions.
